The
small town of
Spili
in
Crete
belongs to the prefecture of
Rethymnon
and is located some 30 kms South of the city. The south shore
lies just behind the coastal montains. The surroundings are composed of
particularly exciting landscapes. Mt. Vorisis (878 meters)
towers above Spili, and the town itself is said to be most picturesque.
Inside
the town they have everything which makes a genuine Cretan small town complete:
Shops, supermarkets, post and bank offices, grammar school and highschool, churches
and even an episcopal palace.

Taverna
Antigoni is located near the northern entrance on the left-hand side, directly facing
Brylakis' supermarket. At first sight the place looks like two separate small tavernas
as the front-side consists of different elements of style.
Because
of that, many guests end up here the first time rather by coincidence (that's what
happened to the web-designer who actually was only waiting for the bus). However they
very quickly turn to regulars as the taverna is reputed to serve the best food in
whole Spili.

At
Kostas' and Eleni's everything is home-made. The vegetable patch and home-butchery
belong to the family's domain. Therefore not only tomatoes and cucumbers come from their
own production but also cutlets, souvlakis and, most of all, the big meat spit that
Kostas roasts every evening on his open charcoal barbecue.
Wine
(red & white!) and Raki are home-made as well. As for the menu, it ranges from
meat-dishes to omelettes, snacks and various typical Cretan starters.
|
| |
Most
popular is the warm feta-salad made of various types of pepper, onions, herbs from
the surrounding mountains and other ingredients that shall remain Kostas' secret.
Breakfast
is served every morning at 9:00 a.m. at the latest. Then, Taverna Antigoni
stays open until late in the night, when needed even until after midnight, all year long.

In
the evening you will frequently meet a colourful society from all corners of the world.
On request, Kostas will also have the pleasure to arrange you a party: just call. They
have music for any taste and there is enough room in the middle of the taverna for
spontaneous Sirtaki dances.
The
biggest party in the year will however take place on the 21st of May, as Kostas and Eleni
celebrate both their name-day.
